Root Canal Therapy

With proper oral hygiene, it should be possible for you to maintain your teeth throughout the majority of your lifetime. Assuming that there are no external factors that could impact your oral health, such as oral cancer or experiencing trauma to your mouth, teeth, or jaw, it is quite possible for your teeth to remain firmly in place. Sometimes achieving this goal, however, means undergoing certain procedures designed to save damaged or decayed teeth. Root canal therapy is one of the last options at our disposal when it comes to saving a natural tooth and keeping it from further decaying and negatively impacting a patient's overall oral health. At Blue Summit Dental Group, Dr. Ralph Becker is proud to offer root canal therapy services designed to promote oral health.

What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy often referred to simply as a "root canal", is a dental procedure that is used to help save teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted. A tooth that is severely decayed or infected, for example, can have a significant impact on your quality of life as well as your oral health and should be repaired or removed as quickly as possible. Root canal therapy, then, is a procedure that essentially removes decay and infection from your teeth, all the way through the roots, and then fills the tooth back up with material designed to prevent further decay.

How Is Root Canal Therapy Performed?

Many patients wonder exactly what they can expect to experience when they come in for a root canal. The truth is that root canal therapy is not so different from receiving a filling. The need for either of these procedures are often caused by the same issue and are designed to treat the same affliction: tooth decay.

When you receive a "filling", we will clean out the decay in your tooth and then fill it with material designed to help prevent further decay. The cavity created by the decay is filled, thus giving the procedure its name. In a root canal, the same process is undertaken. Instead of simply removing part of the tooth in question, a root canal requires us to clear out the majority of the tooth and its roots, cleaning them thoroughly to ward off infection or further decay, and then filling it back up with a dental filling.

How Long Does a Root Canal Take?

A root canal should be comparable in length to receiving a filling, but the exact amount of time you spend in our office depends upon your specific needs as a patient. If the process is complicated by some factor or another, then it could take longer than anticipated to perform. Root canals that are simple in nature can be completed in one visit. Root canals that are more complicated in nature, however, could take multiple visits to complete.
